Our charity started life as a community group in 2006 – founded by patients who wanted to help others. Community Leicestershire Arthritis Self Help (CLASH) gained several members and ran hydrotherapy sessions at Leicester General Hospital, something that is still popular with members today. The group became a registered charity in May 2013 and continued to provide support to people living with arthritis and musculoskeletal conditions, including yoga and exercise sessions, fundraising and social events, and members meetings.
We have had several offices in Leicester, but we are now on Newarke Street within the Voluntary Action Leicester building. We continue to run our activities in Leicester city and in the county and focus our efforts on helping more people living with arthritis to lead a fuller life. We have recently changed our name to Arthritis Support Leicestershire although the core mission is the same. Our well-being workshops are the latest way we are trying to achieve this, combining exercise, nutrition, pain management and mindfulness information and techniques to empower people to manage their condition better themselves.
